About the author

Born in Benares in 1827 and educated at Rugby and Trinity College, Oxford, George William Cox became an Anglican clergyman as well as a historian and man of letters. He is especially remembered for writing about Greek myth, ancient history, and comparative mythology in a way that reached general readers as well as students.

His best-known books include The Mythology of the Aryan Nations, Tales of Ancient Greece, and historical works such as The Crusades and volumes in the History of Greece. Across these writings, he had a gift for turning large, complicated subjects into clear narrative.

Cox died in 1902. His books remain of interest today both as readable introductions to classical themes and as examples of how 19th-century scholars interpreted myth and the ancient world.
