About the author

Born in Athlone, Ireland, in 1843, George Thomas Stokes became an Irish ecclesiastical historian, Anglican clergyman, and teacher. He studied at Queen's College Galway and Trinity College Dublin, and later served for many years at All Saints' Church in Blackrock, near Dublin.

Alongside parish work, he built a strong reputation as a writer on church history and biblical study. His books include Ireland and the Celtic Church, Ireland and the Anglo-Norman Church, and a well-known exposition of The Acts of the Apostles, written in a clear style that aimed to reach general readers as well as students.

He also held academic and cathedral roles in Dublin, including work connected with Trinity College and St Patrick's Cathedral. He died in 1898, leaving behind a body of historical and religious writing that remained in circulation after his death.
