George T. Ulmer

A former Civil War drummer boy turned his wartime memories into a vivid memoir that still feels direct and personal. His writing carries the energy of someone who saw history up close and never lost the urge to tell the story plainly.

About the author

George T. Ulmer is best known for Adventures and Reminiscences of a Volunteer; or, A Drummer Boy from Maine, first published in 1892. In that memoir, he writes from his experience with Company H of the 8th Maine Volunteers, giving readers a firsthand account of the Civil War through the eyes of a very young participant.

Available records also connect him to newspaper work later in life. A historical note from Skagway says he established the first printing plant there in 1898, then moved to Dyea and published the Dyea Trail, showing that his life in print extended beyond his book.

Some biographical details remain hard to confirm, but sources agree that he died in 1899. What stands out most is the unusual path his life took: soldier, memoirist, and newspaperman, with a voice that preserved one small but memorable corner of American history.
