About the author

Born in Toronto in 1839, he was educated at Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto, then called to the bar in 1861. Alongside his legal career, he became deeply involved in the Canadian militia and saw active service during the Fenian Raids, experiences that helped shape much of his later writing.

He wrote on military history, tactics, and public affairs, and earned a wide reputation as a military thinker. Reference works and Canadian historical sources describe him as a lawyer, soldier, magistrate, and author, and note his prominence in movements such as Canada First and imperial federation.

Remembered today as George Taylor Denison III, he died in Toronto in 1925 after a long public life that linked law, politics, military service, and authorship. His work offers a window into how many English-speaking Canadians of his era thought about nationhood, defense, and the British Empire.
