About the author

Born in Dumbarton, Scotland, on October 1, 1855, he moved to Sydney with his family as a child and later became part of Australia’s literary and journalistic world. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School and the University of Melbourne, and he was the brother of writer Alexander Sutherland.

After teaching for a time, he turned to journalism and spent many years with the South Australian Register before later joining The Age in Melbourne. He wrote both on his own and with his brother, and his books included histories of Australia as well as works shaped by his strong interest in science, industry, and new inventions.

He is often remembered as a writer who connected literature, public affairs, and technology. George Sutherland died in Kew, Victoria, on December 1, 1905.
