About the author

Born in Peterborough in either 1815 or 1816, he became known as a journalist and writer who often used the pseudonym January Searle. Sources agree that he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and that his career took him to the United States before he returned to England.

He worked in journalism on both sides of the Atlantic, with accounts linking him to several American newspapers and later to editorial and educational work in Yorkshire. He also served in Huddersfield’s People’s College and was remembered as a prolific author, lecturer, and advocate for practical education.

His books include A Guide to Peterborough Cathedral, Memoirs of William Wordsworth, and studies connected with Ebenezer Elliott. He was described in the Dictionary of National Biography as a “prolific and graceful writer,” a fitting summary for an author whose work ranged across literature, history, and public life.
