About the author

Born in London on January 1, 1842, he later emigrated to Utah and became a well-known figure in the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Alongside his church service, he built a substantial writing career and published books on Latter-day Saint history, doctrine, and story.

He is especially associated with Reynolds v. United States, the 1878 Supreme Court case that tested federal anti-bigamy law. Beyond that legal chapter, he spent many years serving the church, including work connected with the First Presidency and the First Council of the Seventy.

For readers, his interest lies in the way he combined conviction, history, and storytelling. His books reflect an energetic nineteenth-century religious world and the effort to explain, defend, and dramatize a growing faith for a wider audience.
