About the author

Born in Wrentham, Massachusetts, in 1827, George Park Fisher studied at Brown University, Yale Divinity School, and Andover Theological Seminary, and he also spent several years studying in Germany. He became known as an American theologian, historian, and teacher whose career was closely tied to Yale.

Fisher served at Yale first as a professor of divinity and later as professor of ecclesiastical history, earning a reputation as a gifted lecturer and a prolific writer. His books on the history of the Christian church, the Reformation, and the grounds of theism were valued for being learned but readable, making difficult subjects easier for general audiences as well as students.

He died in 1909, but his work remained part of the intellectual and religious life of his era because it brought together careful scholarship, broad historical interest, and a strong instinct for explanation. For listeners drawn to thoughtful religious history, he stands out as a steady and engaging guide.
