About the author

Born in 1830, he was part of a well-known Liverpool merchant family and built a public career that stretched beyond business into politics and philanthropy. He served as Liberal MP for Stoke-on-Trent from 1868 to 1874, and contemporary records also describe him as a merchant and shipowner.

He is remembered by readers mainly for his travel writing and memoirs. His early book Khartoum, and the Blue and White Niles grew out of a Nile journey and reflects the curiosity and descriptive style of mid-19th-century travel literature. Later, he published Recollections of Sixty Years, 1833-1893, a memoir blending political, social, and personal observations.

He died in 1894. Taken together, his surviving books suggest a writer with firsthand experience of commerce, travel, and public affairs, and that mix gives his work an easy historical interest for modern listeners.
