Born in Ontario in 1860, George MacKinnon Wrong studied at the University of Toronto and was ordained in the Anglican Church in 1883. He later became one of Canada’s best-known historians and is widely noted as the first professor of modern history at the University of Toronto.
Wrong wrote extensively about Canadian history, including the colonial period, New France, and the development of Canada as a nation. His work reached both academic and general readers, and he played an important role in building history as a university discipline in Canada.
He died in Toronto in 1948. Today he is remembered for helping establish the serious study of Canadian history and for producing books that introduced many readers to the country’s past.
