About the author

Born in St. Louis in 1905, George Marion became a journalist, author, and activist. Archival and library records describe him as a Communist Party activist as well as a writer, and list books including The "Free Press": Portrait of a Monopoly and Bases & Empire.

In 1936, he went to Spain to cover the Spanish Civil War for the Daily Worker and New Masses. Material from New York University’s special collections says his papers and photographs document that reporting as well as his connections to the Abraham Lincoln Brigade world.

Marion died in 1955. Though he is not widely known today, the surviving records point to a career shaped by political commitment, international conflict, and a lasting interest in how media and power influence public life.
