About the author

Born in Cork on March 27, 1868, George Lynch built a remarkably varied career as a journalist, author, explorer, war correspondent, and inventor. He became known for reporting from major international flashpoints, including the Boer War, the Boxer Rebellion, and the Russo-Japanese War, bringing readers close to events through detailed, immediate storytelling.

Alongside his journalism, he wrote books drawn from travel and conflict, including Impressions of a War Correspondent and The War of the Civilisations. His writing is often remembered for its energy and strong sense of place, shaped by direct experience in difficult and dangerous conditions.

Lynch died on December 29, 1928. Today he stands out as one of those larger-than-life early twentieth-century writers whose career crossed reporting, travel, and adventure in equal measure.
