Best remembered for a firsthand Civil War regimental history, this Union officer turned battlefield experience into a vivid record of the Seventh Ohio Infantry. His writing preserves the daily strain, movement, and memory of one of Ohio’s best-known volunteer units.

by George L. Wood
Born in Ohio in 1837, George L. Wood served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and was associated with both the 7th Ohio Infantry and the 125th Ohio Infantry. A Library of Congress record identifies him as Major George L. Wood and preserves a wartime photograph of him in uniform.
Wood is known as the author of The Seventh Regiment: A Record, a 19th-century history of the 7th Ohio Infantry first published in 1865. The book draws on direct military experience and helps document the regiment’s service for later readers interested in Civil War history.
Archival records at Ohio History Connection also point to a diary connected with Wood, including a short history of the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and biographical sketches of fellow officers. He died in 1867, leaving behind a small but valuable firsthand contribution to the historical record of the war.
