A Winchester schoolmaster and local historian, he wrote lively biographies that opened up Victorian public life for younger readers and general audiences. His best-known work gathers portraits of major 19th-century figures in a clear, approachable style.

by George Henry Blore
George Henry Blore was an English writer, schoolmaster, and historian associated closely with Winchester College. According to the Hampshire Field Club & Archaeological Society, he studied there in the 1880s, later returned as a master, and remained on the staff until 1930.
Much of his historical writing appears to have come after his retirement. The same Hampshire Field Club profile notes his work with the Friends of Winchester Cathedral and his role as editor of the Winchester Cathedral Record, showing how strongly his interests were rooted in local and ecclesiastical history.
Readers today are most likely to know him for Victorian Worthies: Sixteen Biographies, a collection preserved by Project Gutenberg. The book reflects what makes his work appealing: a teacher's instinct for clear explanation, a fondness for character sketches, and an interest in making notable lives feel memorable rather than distant.
