About the author

George Gilbert is a historian of modern Russian history at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on late imperial and revolutionary Russia, with particular interest in nationalism, the radical right, political violence, and martyrdom.

His first monograph, The Radical Right in Late Imperial Russia: Dreams of a True Fatherland, was published by Routledge in 2016 and was nominated for the Alec Nove Prize in Russian and East European Studies. He also edited Reading Russian Sources in 2020 and has published work in both English and Russian.

Alongside his research and teaching, he has contributed public-facing writing and lectures that help wider audiences understand Russian history and politics. That mix of serious scholarship and accessible explanation makes his work especially useful for listeners who want context as well as narrative.
