About the author

Born in 1814 and active in Victorian Britain, George Fyler Townsend is remembered chiefly as a translator, editor, and compiler of classic story collections. He is most often associated with Aesop's Fables, a book that remained widely read and helped keep those ancient tales in circulation for English-speaking audiences.

Townsend also worked on other traditional literature, including well-known collections of Eastern and classical stories. His books were aimed at general readers, and they reflect a 19th-century enthusiasm for making older tales accessible, instructive, and enjoyable.

He died in 1900. Although he is not as widely recognized today as some of the authors he translated, his editions played a lasting part in how many readers first encountered these stories.
