About the author

George Frederick Ansell (4 March 1826 – 21 December 1880) was an English scientific inventor, chemist, assayer, and writer. He was born at Carshalton in Surrey and is especially associated with scientific and industrial work rather than with literary fame alone.

Early in life, he studied medicine and was apprenticed to a surgeon, but he left that path for chemistry. He later worked in scientific roles including service connected with the Royal School of Mines, and he investigated technical problems such as mine safety and the risks posed by fire-damp.

As an author, he is chiefly remembered for producing an important work on the Royal Mint. That mix of hands-on scientific expertise and clear technical writing gives his books a practical, grounded character that still makes him an interesting historical figure.
