About the author

Born in 1857 and dying in 1916, George Coffey was an Irish archaeologist, art historian, and museum curator best known for his work on early Irish antiquities. He served in the National Museum in Dublin, where he became the first Keeper of Irish Antiquities, and he built a strong reputation as a careful scholar of prehistoric Ireland and early metalwork.

His books and catalogues helped readers understand Irish archaeology in a clear, organized way. He wrote on subjects including Bronze Age Ireland, Celtic art, and important museum collections, and his work was part of a wider effort to place Irish material culture at the center of serious historical study.

Coffey is remembered as one of the scholars who helped professionalize Irish archaeology in the years before independence. Although portraits of him do not appear to be readily available on the main reference pages consulted, his influence survives through his publications and through the museum collections he helped interpret.
