About the author

Born in Dublin in 1857, George Coffey became known as an archaeologist, bookbinder, and scholar of Irish history. He was closely involved in the late 19th- and early 20th-century cultural revival, and his work connected the study of ancient Ireland with a growing public interest in Irish identity and heritage.

Coffey served as the first keeper of antiquities at what is now the National Museum of Ireland. In that role, he helped organize and interpret important collections of Irish artifacts, and he wrote guides and major studies on subjects such as prehistoric ornament, Newgrange, and the Bronze Age in Ireland.

He died in 1916, but his reputation rests on more than museum work alone. He was one of the early writers who made Ireland’s prehistoric monuments and objects feel vivid and meaningful to general readers as well as specialists.
