About the author

George C. Husmann (George Charles Husmann, 1861–1939) was an American pomologist and agricultural writer whose published work focused mainly on grapes and vineyard practice. Surviving records of his books and bulletins show him writing on subjects such as unfermented grape juice, grape propagation and training, muscadine grapes, and testing grape varieties in the vinifera regions of the United States.

Much of his writing was produced through the United States Department of Agriculture. Contemporary and archival sources identify him as an expert or pomologist in charge of viticultural investigations, and a 1932 trade-paper notice reports that he retired after about 30 years overseeing USDA viticultural investigations.

For modern readers, Husmann is most interesting as a practical specialist rather than a literary celebrity. His books were written to explain cultivation and preservation methods in a direct, useful way, which makes them a window into how American growers and home producers were being taught in the early 1900s.
