About the author

Born in Milton, Massachusetts, on June 12, 1924, George H. W. Bush became one of the youngest aviators in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he built a successful career in the Texas oil business before entering politics, where he served as a congressman, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China, and director of the CIA.

Bush was vice president under Ronald Reagan from 1981 to 1989, then served as the 41st president of the United States from 1989 to 1993. His presidency is often remembered for the end of the Cold War, the U.S.-led coalition response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in the Gulf War, and the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

After leaving office, he remained a widely recognized public figure and was often noted for his partnership with his wife, Barbara Bush, and for a lifetime of service that stretched across war, business, diplomacy, and national politics. He died on November 30, 2018, at age 94.
