About the author

Born in Milton, Massachusetts, on June 12, 1924, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and became one of its youngest aviators. After the war he graduated from Yale, moved to Texas, and built a career in the oil business before entering politics.

His public career stretched across many major roles: U.S. representative from Texas, ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China, director of the CIA, and vice president under Ronald Reagan. In 1988 he was elected president, serving from 1989 to 1993 during a period of major international change that included the fall of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the U.S.-led coalition victory in the Gulf War.

He died on November 30, 2018, in Houston, Texas. He is often remembered for a reserved, duty-first style and for treating public service as a serious responsibility rather than a performance.
