About the author

George Bernard Hamilton Bishop was educated at King’s School in Gloucester, Culham College, and Durham, where he prepared for ordination in the Church of England. Before entering the ministry, he served with military volunteer units, coached rowing, and was praised for rescuing a drowning rower in 1911.

After ordination, Bishop was sent to study the Russian Orthodox Church. His research led to The Religion of Russia, published in 1915, a study of Orthodox history, worship, faith, and church life from an Anglican perspective. He also wrote Tales of Muscovy and the Ukraine, presenting Russian religious culture in a more accessible literary form.

Bishop later became vicar of Cardington and joined the Army Chaplains’ Department as a Chaplain 4th Class, attached to the 6th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed by shellfire while tending wounded soldiers during the opening of the Third Battle of the Aisne on May 27, 1918, aged 34, and is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial in France.
