Born near Halifax, Yorkshire, on 17 May 1841, George Barnett Smith was an English author and journalist. He was educated at the British Lancastrian School in Halifax and later moved to London, where he worked on the staff of the Globe and then the Echo.
Alongside newspaper work, he wrote widely on literature, history, and public life. He contributed to major reference works including the Dictionary of National Biography and the Encyclopædia Britannica, and he also published under the pseudonym Guy Roslyn.
Smith became known for biographies, critical studies, and historical writing aimed at a broad reading public. He died in Bournemouth on 2 January 1909, leaving behind the record of a busy literary career that connected Victorian journalism with popular nonfiction.
