About the author

Born in 1828, he studied law and built an early career in Kentucky before the Civil War changed the course of his life. He served in public office and became known as a strong Southern partisan at a time when Kentucky itself was sharply divided.

When war came, he joined the Confederate cause and rose to the rank of brigadier general. He served in the Army of Northern Virginia and was associated with the First Kentucky Brigade, a unit that earned a fierce reputation in some of the war's hardest fighting.

After the war, he lived for a time outside the United States and eventually returned to civilian life. He died in 1892, leaving behind a story shaped by ambition, conflict, and the deep political fractures of nineteenth-century America.
