About the author

Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1875, George Alfred Williams built a career as a painter, illustrator, and author. The Delaware Art Museum describes him as a self-taught watercolor artist who later studied with Douglas Volk and Kenyon Cox at the Art Students League of New York.

He began illustrating for magazines around the turn of the twentieth century and went on to illustrate a number of books. Library listings also show that he wrote and illustrated books of his own, including editions connected with classic literature and historical subjects.

Williams died in 1932. Though he is remembered today mainly through his art and illustration work, his books still reflect the same lively, image-rich storytelling that shaped his wider career.
