An early pioneer of German philology, he helped bring medieval German literature into the university classroom and treated old texts with the same care scholars gave the Greek and Latin classics. His work helped lay foundations for the serious study of Middle High German.

by Georg Friedrich Benecke
Born in Mönchsroth in 1762 and later active in Göttingen, he became one of the key early scholars of older German language and literature. He is remembered as a German philologist and librarian whose career was closely tied to the University of Göttingen.
He is often noted for being among the first academics to lecture on Old German literature at a university level. His research focused on medieval German texts, and he applied careful philological methods to editing and studying them, helping establish a more rigorous approach to Middle High German literature.
Benecke served as a professor in Göttingen from 1814 and later became a librarian there in 1829. He died in Göttingen in 1844, leaving behind a reputation as an important early figure in the scholarly study of German medieval literature.
