A Finnish baron, army captain, and Swedish-language travel writer, he turned his journeys into vivid adventure writing. Best known for a book of African travel memories, he wrote from direct experience and a strong curiosity about the wider world.

by Georg Edvard von Alfthan
Born in Helsinki on June 17, 1856, Georg Edvard von Alfthan was a Finnish nobleman who served as a captain and wrote in Swedish. Sources agree that he died in Artjärvi on March 23, 1901.
He is chiefly remembered as a travel writer. His best-known work is Afrikanska reseminnen: äfventyr och intryck från en utflykt till de svartes verldsdel, a book that reflects his travels in Africa and presents them as a mix of adventure and personal observation.
Although not a widely known figure today, his writing preserves a 19th-century Finnish-Swedish perspective on travel and exploration. His surviving work gives modern readers a glimpse of how distant places were described for Nordic audiences of his time.
