About the author

George Smith Tyack was an English cleric and author born in Camborne, Cornwall, on February 28, 1858. A biographical note from the Whiting Society identifies him as the eldest son of the Rev. William Davis Tyack and Eliza Tyack, and records that he was ordained deacon in 1881 and priest in 1882.

He wrote a number of works on church life, symbolism, and religious custom. Listings gathered by the Online Books Page show titles including A Book About Bells, The Cross in Ritual, Architecture and Art, and Historic Dress of the Clergy, which suggest the wide range of his interests within Christian history and material culture.

The surviving picture of his career is that of a writer who liked to make specialist subjects readable for general audiences. Reliable portrait photographs were not readily available in the sources reviewed, but his books remain the clearest introduction to his warm, curious style.
