Born in Winthrop, Massachusetts, on August 24, 1899, he became an American writer whose career stretched across comic strips, comic books, Big Little Books, and juvenile adventure fiction. He is often credited as Gaylord Du Bois or Gaylord DuBois, and reference sources describe him as having written more than 3,000 comics stories over the course of his career.

He is especially associated with Western Publishing's adventure titles and with long runs on characters such as Tarzan and Turok, Son of Stone. His stories were known for clear, energetic storytelling and for an enduring fascination with wilderness adventure, animals, and survival.

He died in Orange City, Florida, on October 20, 1993. Though many readers may not know his name right away, his work was a steady presence in American popular reading for decades, and his influence still shows up wherever classic adventure comics are remembered.
