Born in Los Angeles in 1955, Gary Phillips is an American writer, editor, and community activist best known for crime fiction rooted in the city he knows firsthand. He was raised in South Central Los Angeles, and that background helped shape the voice and setting of his work.
His debut novel, Violent Spring (1994), introduced the Ivan Monk series and is widely noted as an important Los Angeles crime novel. Since then, he has published more than two dozen books across several forms, including mysteries, graphic novels, short stories, and anthologies.
Phillips has also been recognized for work beyond his novels, including editing the Anthony Award-winning anthology The Obama Inheritance: Fifteen Stories of Conspiracy Noir. Across his writing, he is especially known for blending fast-moving storytelling with an eye for politics, race, and everyday life in urban America.
