About the author

Born in Vasto on February 28, 1783, Gabriele Rossetti was an Italian poet, scholar, and revolutionary. Reliable reference sources describe him as a supporter of constitutional and nationalist causes in southern Italy, and his political activity eventually forced him into exile.

After leaving Italy, he settled in England, where he spent the rest of his life in London. He became known not only for his poetry and scholarship—especially his writings on Dante—but also as the father of several gifted children, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Christina Rossetti.

Rossetti died in London on April 24, 1854. His life links Italian political struggle, literary scholarship, and the story of one of the best-known artistic families of the nineteenth century.
