About the author

Born in Ingouville, France, in 1844, Gabriel Monod became one of the key figures in the professional study of history in France. After studying in Paris and spending time in Germany, he absorbed scholarly methods that emphasized careful use of sources and close critical reading.

He went on to teach generations of students and played an important role in reforming historical study. Monod is closely associated with the growth of modern academic history in France, and he helped found the Revue historique, an influential journal that encouraged rigorous, research-driven historical work.

He died in 1912, but his influence lasted well beyond his lifetime. Rather than being remembered mainly for a single popular book, he is known for helping set the standards of serious historical scholarship and for encouraging a more disciplined, evidence-based approach to the past.
