About the author

Born into a Staffordshire family deeply connected with the pottery trade, George Woolliscroft Rhead grew up around design and craftsmanship. He trained early at Minton’s and later studied at the South Kensington School of Art, building a career that blended pottery painting, illustration, etching, and teaching.

Rhead wrote several books on art and material culture, including Staffordshire Pots & Potters, British Pottery Marks, Chats on Costume, and History of the Fan. That range gives a good sense of his interests: he was drawn not just to beautiful objects, but to the stories, traditions, and working methods behind them.

Alongside his writing, he was active as an artist and teacher in London, and sources describe him as part of the wider Arts and Crafts world. He also collaborated on illustration projects with members of his artistic family, including his brothers Louis and Frederick Rhead. His combination of practical knowledge and historical curiosity still makes his work appealing to readers interested in design history.
