About the author
Born in China in 1858 and educated at Monmouth School and Oriel College, Oxford, he went on to be ordained in the Church of England in the mid-1880s. After a short curacy in Basing, Hampshire, he began the work for which he is best known: teaching at St David’s College, Lampeter.
At Lampeter he served as professor of Latin and lecturer in Hebrew, remaining there until his retirement in 1932. Sources describe him as a lasting influence on generations of students, especially through his work in theology, classics, and church life in Wales.
He also wrote widely. Alongside biblical studies such as histories of the Old and New Testaments, he produced regional guidebooks on places including South Wales, Monmouthshire, Somerset, and Herefordshire, showing an author equally at home with scripture, scholarship, and landscape.
