About the author

George Wicker Elderkin was born in Chicago in 1879 and became a classicist, art historian, and archaeologist whose career was closely tied to Princeton University. Reliable reference sources describe him as part of the early core of Princeton’s art and archaeology program, following studies at Dartmouth and graduate work at Johns Hopkins.

His writing focused on the art, architecture, and religious life of the ancient Mediterranean. Works associated with him include Problems in Periclean Buildings, a study of major Athenian monuments, and The First Three Temples at Delphi, along with other scholarly writing on Greek religion and archaeology. He also contributed to larger archaeological publication projects connected with Princeton.

Elderkin died in 1965. Although he wrote as a specialist, his surviving books still appeal to readers interested in how careful scholarship can bring ancient places like Athens and Delphi back into focus.
