About the author

Born in 1849 in Vizye, in Eastern Thrace, Georgios M. Vizyenos became one of the most important figures in 19th-century Greek literature. He was born Georgios Syrmas and later became known by the name of his hometown. After a difficult childhood, he pursued studies in places including Cyprus, Athens, and Germany, where he studied subjects such as philosophy and psychology.

Vizyenos is especially remembered for his short stories and poetry. His fiction drew on autobiography, folklore, and village life, but what made it stand out was its emotional depth and close attention to memory, guilt, family ties, and the hidden motives of ordinary people. That blend helped make him a key early master of the modern Greek short story.

He died in Athens in 1896. Even with a relatively small body of work, his influence has lasted, and readers still return to him for the warmth, sorrow, and psychological richness of his storytelling.
