An English soldier-scholar who turned a life of public service and military experience into clear, lively writing on Norse history and international affairs.

by G. M. (Geoffrey Malcolm) Gathorne-Hardy
Geoffrey Malcolm Gathorne-Hardy, who wrote as G. M. Gathorne-Hardy, was an English soldier, writer, and specialist in Norse subjects. Born in 1878, he was educated at Eton and New College, Oxford, where he served as President of the Oxford Union.
His career moved between military service, diplomacy, and writing. He fought in the Second Boer War and the First World War, and he also worked on the historical records of the British Foreign Office, including material connected with the Bodø Affair. That mix of practical experience and scholarship helped shape the direct, informed tone of his books.
He is especially remembered for works on the Norse world, including The Norse Discoverers of America, as well as for writing on modern international affairs. He died in 1972.
