Born in Trois-Rivières, Lower Canada, around 1807, Gustave Louis Maurice Strauss went on to build an unusually varied career in Europe and Britain. Sources describe him as a writer, translator, journalist, and trained medical man, and note that he became a familiar figure in London literary circles.

He wrote across an impressively wide range of subjects. His published works include fiction such as The Old Ledger, memoir-based books including Reminiscences of an Old Bohemian and Stories by an Old Bohemian, as well as educational and practical works. He was also associated with the Savage Club, a well-known social circle for writers and artists, and was remembered by the nickname "Old Bohemian."

Strauss died on September 2, 1887, in Teddington, England. Today he is best remembered as one of those energetic Victorian men of letters whose career crossed borders, professions, and genres with unusual ease.
