About the author

Born in 1889, G. D. H. Cole became one of the best-known British political theorists of the twentieth century. He is especially associated with guild socialism, the Fabian Society, and the co-operative movement, and he wrote widely on socialism, economics, and history as well as on practical questions of democratic organization.

Much of his career was tied to Oxford, where he studied and later taught. Alongside his political and historical writing, he was remarkably prolific as an author, producing major works on socialist thought and social theory while also reaching a broad readership through journalism and other books.

Cole also wrote detective fiction with his wife, Margaret Cole, adding another side to an already unusually varied literary life. He died in 1959, but he remains an important figure for readers interested in British socialism, labour history, and the idea that economic life should be shaped by democratic participation.
