by G. Christopher (George Christopher) Davies
Born in Oswestry in 1849, George Christopher Davies grew up in a family shaped by science and the outdoors; his father was the geologist David Christopher Davies. He later moved to Norwich, where he built a public career while also becoming a remarkably prolific writer.
Davies is especially remembered for the way he wrote about the Norfolk Broads. He was an angler, yachtsman, naturalist, and photographer, and his books helped spark broader interest in the rivers and broads of Norfolk and Suffolk. Alongside practical and descriptive writing about the region, he also published fiction and adventure stories for younger readers, often drawing on the excitement of field sports and the natural world.
He died in Norwich in 1922. Today, he stands out as one of those energetic late-Victorian authors whose work joined entertainment with firsthand knowledge, and whose enthusiasm helped shape how readers imagined the English countryside.
