About the author

Born in Frankfurt am Main on February 17, 1752, Friedrich Maximilian von Klinger grew up in difficult circumstances and became part of the circle of young writers around Goethe. He emerged as an important voice in German literature during the 1770s, and his 1776 play Sturm und Drang became so influential that its title was adopted for the wider literary movement.

Klinger wrote plays, novels, and tragedies marked by passion, conflict, and rebellion against restraint. Although he is closely linked with the fiery spirit of early Sturm und Drang, his career did not remain limited to the literary world.

Later, he entered Russian service, where he worked as an officer and eventually held court and administrative posts. He died on March 9, 1831, and remains a fascinating figure not only for his writing, but also for the way his life bridged literature, politics, and public service.
