About the author

Born in Stuttgart on February 12, 1750, Friedrich Christoph Jonathan Fischer was a German historian, legal scholar, and publicist. He first trained in administrative studies, then turned to law at the University of Tübingen, building the broad intellectual background that shaped his later writing.

Fischer went on to teach in the field of public and feudal law, and he is also remembered as a cultural historian. Reference works describe him as a writer interested not only in law and politics but also in the larger story of German society and institutions.

Among his notable works is Geschichte des teutschen Handels, a wide-ranging history of German trade that also explores shipping, crafts, agriculture, urban life, and economic customs. He died in Halle (Saale) on September 30, 1797.
