Friedrich Borcherding

1849–1924

A German schoolteacher and naturalist, he spent decades in Vegesack while building a reputation as a careful observer of mollusks and freshwater life. His work bridges local teaching, field science, and the quieter world of 19th- and early-20th-century natural history.

About the author

Born in 1849 in Groß Mimmelage near Badbergen, Friedrich Borcherding was trained as a teacher and went on to spend most of his working life in Vegesack. He studied at the gymnasium in Quakenbrück and then at the teachers' seminary in Osnabrück, later serving for many years at the local elementary school in Vegesack.

Alongside his teaching, he became known as a naturalist, especially for his interest in conchology and the study of mollusks. Sources describe him as a devoted observer of the natural world, and his name appears in scientific and bibliographic records connected with malacology and freshwater zoology.

He died in 1924 in Bremen-Vegesack. Available sources present him chiefly as a pedagogue and naturalist rather than a literary figure, so details about his books are limited here to what could be confirmed from library and reference records.
