About the author

Born in Värmland in 1816, Fredrik August Dahlgren built a varied career as a writer, civil servant, and scholar of language. He studied in Uppsala, later worked in the Swedish civil service and at the National Archives, and developed a lasting interest in older Swedish language and dialect.

He wrote poems, songs, plays, and translations, but he is especially associated with works shaped by the culture and dialect of his home region. His play Värmlänningarna, first published in the 1840s, became his most famous success and helped make him widely known to Swedish audiences.

Dahlgren was elected to the Swedish Academy in 1871 and remained a member until his death in 1895. Alongside his literary work, he also contributed to the study of Swedish vocabulary and language history, giving his career a rare mix of popular appeal and scholarly depth.
