About the author

Born in 1864, Frederick Scott Oliver was a Scottish writer and businessman best known as F. S. Oliver. He trained in law, but his career moved into business, where he became closely associated with Debenhams, while also building a reputation as an influential political commentator.

Oliver wrote about tariff reform, imperial federation, and the future of Britain in a period of major political change. He is especially remembered for Alexander Hamilton: An Essay on American Union, a study of Hamilton that used American history to think through questions of union, statecraft, and political leadership.

He was also connected with the Round Table movement and took an active interest in public affairs beyond the page. Although some of his political positions are firmly of their time, his writing still stands out for its energy, confidence, and ambition. He died in 1934.
