About the author

Frederick Lyman Hitchcock was a Pennsylvania lawyer, Civil War veteran, and author best known for War from the Inside, a firsthand account of service with the 132nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. The book presents the war from the perspective of an officer who served in the regiment as adjutant and major, giving it a vivid, personal quality.

After the war, Hitchcock also became known for local history. He wrote History of Scranton and Its People, a substantial early-20th-century work that helped document the development of Scranton and the lives of many of its residents.

Sources available during this search consistently describe him as living from 1837 to 1924. Taken together, his writing shows two sides of the same talent: careful eyewitness remembrance and a strong desire to record the people and places of Pennsylvania for future readers.
