by Frederic Soler i Hubert
Born in Barcelona in 1839, Frederic Soler i Hubert was a Catalan poet, playwright, and theater impresario. He is best remembered by his pen name, Serafí Pitarra, and for writing in Catalan at a time when the language was gaining new literary energy in public life.
He first won popular attention with comic and satirical pieces and went on to build a remarkably large body of work for the stage. Over time, he became a central figure in Catalan theater, writing dramas and comedies that reached a wide audience and helped shape modern theatrical culture in Catalonia.
Soler was also recognized beyond the stage: he was a three-time winner of the Floral Games, and he later chaired them in 1882. He died in Barcelona in 1895, but his reputation endured as one of the major literary figures behind the rise of modern Catalan drama.
