Born in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, on June 3, 1872, Frederic Antes Godcharles was educated at Lafayette College, where he studied electrical engineering. He went on to build a varied career as a historian, author, librarian, and politician, with much of his work centered on Pennsylvania's past.
Godcharles served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and was later associated with the State Library of Pennsylvania and the State Museum of Pennsylvania. He became known for compiling and writing large-scale historical and biographical works, including studies of Pennsylvania families, communities, and public life.
He died on December 30, 1944. Today he is remembered mainly for the breadth of his historical writing, which remains useful to readers interested in Pennsylvania history, genealogy, and regional biography.
