About the author

Born in Sadská, Bohemia, on July 24, 1766, Franz Xaver Niemetschek was a Czech philosopher, teacher, and music critic. He studied in Prague and later taught philosophy there, building a career in education while also writing about music.

He is chiefly known for his 1798 biography of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, often described as the first full-length life of the composer. Because it was written close to Mozart’s lifetime and drew on early sources, including support from Mozart’s widow Constanze, it has remained an important historical source for later writers and scholars.

Niemetschek died in Vienna on March 19, 1849. Though not widely known outside music history, his name continues to matter because his writing helped shape how generations of readers first came to understand Mozart.
