About the author

Born in Cham, Bavaria, in 1834, Franz von Reber studied in Munich and Berlin before spending time in Rome, a formative step for many art scholars of his era. He later built his career in Munich, where he taught art history and aesthetics and became an important academic voice in the field.

Reber is best remembered for broad, synthetic works on the history of art, including studies of ancient and medieval art that were translated and circulated beyond Germany. Alongside his writing, he also held major museum responsibilities in Munich, including the directorship of the Royal Gallery, linking scholarship with the care and presentation of major collections.

He died in Pöcking in 1919. The available sources consistently describe him as a German art historian, and while they show his institutional importance clearly, they offer little personal detail, so his public legacy rests mainly on his teaching, museum work, and survey histories of art.
