by Franz S. (Franz Seraphicus) Gschmeidler
Born in Vienna on March 12, 1879, and later associated closely with Mödling, Franz Seraphicus Gschmeidler was an Austrian poet, journalist, and the founder of the newspaper Mödlinger Nachrichten. He published poetry as well as other literary works, and his writing remained tied to Austrian local life and culture.
His poetry collection Heimat und Fremde is one of the works by which he is still remembered. The title itself suggests a recurring interest in home, distance, and belonging, themes that fit well with his reputation as a lyrical writer.
Gschmeidler died in Mödling on May 11, 1972. Today he is of interest both as a regional literary figure and as someone who stood at the crossroads of literature, publishing, and community journalism in Austria.
